How To Play Green Onions On The Saxophone

G’day Ladies and Gentlemen, Boys and Girls and everyone in between – it’s Matthew here from how to play the sax dot com !

In a previous lesson we were talking about the 12 bar blues…..and the 12 bar blues I wanted to do today is a very, very, very well known song called Green Onions.

In terms of having fun, playing saxophone, being awesome and repeating the whole process, this Green Onions 12 bar blues saxophone lesson fits really nicely !

This song is in an awesome key from an alto saxophone perspective, which makes it really easy for us to play.

Booker T was a keyboard player.  He played Hammond organ – but that’s alright because it translates really nicely onto our alto saxophones.

The main melody repeats over and over and over again.

My challenge to you – apart from to have fun, play saxophone, be awesome, repeat – it to play a little solo over this song, as well as to learn the main melody.

Give it a go – wiggle your fingers…..if it doesn’t feel right, if it doesn’t work, that’s cool, no stress, no problem, that’s ok but I encourage you to just give it a go.

 

Play a solo on your own – just make it up.

If it helps, you can play any of the notes in the C major scale :
C  D  E  F  G  A  B  C  –  and you can’t go wrong.

Play along with the melody, or just play….make something up…..it’s entirely up to you.

Either way, please have fun, please play saxophone, please be awesome, please repeat !
