Wrong Saxophone Notes

There are no such things as wrong saxophone notes.

I’ve said it – and I’ll say it again:

When you are playing your saxophone, there is no such thing as a wrong note.

Ok….let me explain.

Yes, sometimes there are some dubious choices with the notes you might be playing at any one moment in time.

Yes, sometimes the note you just played may or may not be what the composer of the song (or you !!) intended.

However, when you are playing, CHANCES ARE HIGH THAT NO-ONE WILL NOTICE if your play any wrong saxophone notes.

When you play your saxophone, it is important to be confident.

There is no need to apologise – ever.

Play it like you mean it.

It can be tempting to say something like, “I’m still learning”, or ” I’m just a beginner”, or “I’m not very good at this song yet”, when you are playing your saxophone.

The flip side of this is to stand up tall and shout, “This is my saxophone and I am playing this note right now !!!”

Punch your fist in the air.

Have Fun.  Play Saxophone.  Be Awesome.  Repeat.

( Tip: Here are 3 ways to make saxophone practice fun. )

If you play your saxophone with bravado, with confidence, deliberately, every note becomes the right note.

Wrong saxophone notes do not exist.

Make A Different Note Choice Next Time

Well known songs usually have specific notes in a specific order.

Actually, when you stop and think about it, the melody of any particular song is what makes that song.  If you play the saxophone notes in a different order, then arguably you might be playing a different song altogether.

You the saxophonist probably should go out of your way to learn the correct notes in the correct order of the song that you are playing.

Yoda said it best.

“Do, or do not.  There is no try”.

But, sh*t happens, as they say.

Sometimes, we are learning and have not quite mastered the finger choreography just yet.

Sometimes, our fingers do have a mind of their own.

Sometimes, we actually do play a note that we may not have preferred to play at that particular moment in time.

While we might be thinking “there is no such thing as a wrong note”, it can sometimes be not as easy as it sounds to convince our fingers and our ears of that.

Wrong saxophone notes do not exist.

If you play a note, play it loudly, play it proudly, play it on purpose.

Play A Different Saxophone Note Next Time

Did You Like The Note You Just Played ?

So – you’ve just played a note on your saxophone.

Did you like it ?

In the context of the song, or phrase, or in your mind, was it “correct” ?

If yes, then play it again next time !!

Or was it, perhaps, “not necessarily the right note for that song at that moment” ?

Would you play it again, if you had the choice ?

Maybe – maybe not.

If no, then don’t play it again !

It is that simple.

As long as you play your saxophone with purpose, deliberately and confidently, you cannot go wrong.

Wrong Saxophone Notes

Wrong Saxophone Notes

As long as you listen to what you are playing, you can remember that particular note – and play it again, or not, as the case may be.

You do not need my permission for anything.

But, for what it’s worth, I hereby give you permission to play what ever note you like on your saxophone.

Yes, there can be some dubious or accidental choices made when playing a song or a musical phrase on your saxophone.

It can take some time before your ears, your fingers and your brain can get it together to play the right saxophone notes in the right order….or at least in an order that is pleasing to your ears.

Always remember:

Wrong Saxophone Notes do not exist.  Full stop.  End of story.

Thanks,

Matthew
