Hello, my name is Matthew and I want to help you learn How To Play The Sax.
Are you a beginner saxophone student ?
Have you been struggling with your sax ?
Maybe you are learning the sax at school, or college / university, or as something on your bucket list ?
Perhaps you’ve recently retired and have decided to pick up your sax again after a 30+ year break ?
Learning how to play the sax on your own is not easy. But with the right guidance, it can be ! Would you like some help ?
The saxophone is my passion. And I can help you make it yours too.
As a young child, I am a little embarrassed to admit that I had private one-on-one recorder lessons. These progressed to private clarinet lessons….but I was always watching the saxophones in the school concert band.
Then when I was 14 years old I got my first saxophone. It was a cheap student model – a tenor sax.
And I LOVED it.
I played it almost every day. I was very fortunate that my two music teachers in my final years at school were a great double act and extremely encouraging, Thanks Rob M and Rob W !!
There is always one student in every high school music program that plays in all the bands and orchestras, plays all the solos, gets all the gigs, performs at all of the recitals and actually is rather good. That was me.
I joined a rock band and did my first pub gig shortly after I turned 17. My parents encouraged me, and took me to many of my gigs because I was too young to drive, but they did suggest that if I got arrested for being underage then I was on my own…..
Fast forward to now and I am fortunate and lucky that I can play my saxophone almost with whomever I want, whenever I want, in any style of music that I want.
All through university / college I played my saxophone in bands, orchestras and groups of all kinds. I’ve done hundreds of recordings and have had the pleasure of performing in multiple countries all over the world, including Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK (England, Wales and Scotland), Germany, China, Hong Kong and Thailand.
I am a proud band member of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2018 Best Overseas Show Award group (Nuworks Theatre), which was an amazing experience !!
And now that I’m old enough to know better, I still keep playing my sax.
I play my saxophones because I enjoy it. I like the sound they make. I like the the way my fingers move around them and how I can join in with others and make some great music together. Or I can play music by myself.
My saxophone is also my meditation. If I’ve had a tough day, or need to escape, I simply pull out one of my saxophones and my troubles all fade away.
I am pleased that my teenage daughters also use music for pleasure and as a creative outlet. They too use their music as a way to calm down. They also enjoy playing with other people – older and younger than they are.
I enjoy and have fun with my music – I want you to do the same.
I want to help you with your saxophone journey. I have decades of experience that I can pass on to you, so that you don’t need to spend decades learning.
I can teach you “the rules” as well as when and how to break them !
