Staying Alive Saxophone Cover
Who doesn’t like a good Stayin’ Alive Saxophone cover ? No-body, that’s who !!
Part of the “Have Fun. Play Saxophone. Be Awesome. Repeat.” concept here at HowToPlayTheSax.com is to actually have fun while playing our saxophones.
This applies to everyone – including yours truly.
As a result of trying to practice what I preach, every now and then I like to pick one of my favourite songs and put my own saxophonic spin onto it.
Stayin Alive by The Bee Gees is obviously one of the best disco songs ever.
Everyone knows the iconic images of a young John Travolta in his white suite strutting his stuff on the dance floor in the (surprisingly terrible) movie Saturday Night Fever.
Everyone knows the iconic images of the three brothers Gibb that make up the Bee Gees strutting their stuff in the original film clip. There is soooooo much strutting in the film clip !!
Stayin’ Alive Saxophone Cover
The only problem with the original is that the saxophones are quite hard to hear…there may be a couple buried deep in the brass lines….maybe….
So, I thought that a Stayin Alive saxophone version was a good project to get my teeth stuck into.
Dodging fork lifts, dancing with the factory staff, strutting down the length of the warehouse, hiding in amongst the boxes and paying just a little bit of homage to the original film clip turned out to be lots of fun.
Wearing a hi-vis safety vest while filming my Staying Alive Saxophone Cover was a good idea (not to mention a mandatory Occupational Health And Safety rule), given the number of forklifts encountered during filming.
I would strongly encourage you to record yourself playing your saxophone. It doesn’t need to be fancy or complicated or difficult – just use your phone.
Recording yourself playing your favourite song(s) allows you to listen back and hear your saxophone – often warts and all – which in turn allows you to critique yourself.
Do you like the sound of your recording ? Do you like how you’ve chosen to play the notes you played in your recording ? Can you make it “better” ?
Or just keeping your saxophone recording for yourself – as a snap shot in time that, like a photograph, is a record of one particular musical moment.
Just in case you have not seen the original film clip for Stayin’ Alive (saxophone or no saxophone) here it is:
Special thanks to David and Glenn at Camatic Seating for letting me use their factory and allowing me to have fun, play saxophone, be awesome in my own special way and repeat 🙂
Special extra thanks to the Factory staff at Camatic for allowing me to interrupt their work, for joining in with my shenanigans, and for also being awesome 🙂
I enjoyed playing, filming and recording my Stayin Alive Saxophone cover. It made me smile. I hope you enjoy it and that it makes you smile too !
Thanks,
Matthew 🎷
