How Music Affects The Brain

How playing an instrument benefits your brain

Many people have a mental image of “music lessons” as being something forced upon young children.  Parents have known since cavemen times that music lessons are good for their children’s development.  But why is that ?

The lottery result of the music teacher and their teaching methods then determines the young child’s love of playing an instrument – or hatred of playing an instrument – potentially for the rest of their lives.

As a result, those who had a bad experience with playing music in their younger years often never try again.  This is an incredible shame !!

How music affects the brain has been the topic of multiple studies by people who are much smarter than you and me.  these studies have shown that playing music can increase brain function – in both children and adults.

It turns out that while listening to music engages the brain in many interesting and beneficial ways, actually playing music is the brain’s equivalent of a full body work out.

Playing a musical instrument engages practically every area of the brain all at once – especially those parts of the brain associated with visual, auditory and motor functions.

As with any other workout, disciplined structured practice in playing music strengthens those brain functions allowing us to apply that strength to other activities.

In short, playing a musical instrument ( such as the saxophone 😉 ) makes us smarter !!

So, how playing an instrument benefits your brain is shown in your ability to process visual, audio and fine movement concepts.

Complex thoughts, memory – all of these concepts are benefits of how music affects the brain…and even affects our bodies.

How Music Affects The Brain

“The Mozart Effect” is a term used to describe a theory that listening to classical music will make you smarter.

It is not just classical music that will help you become bigger/better/stronger/faster/able to leap tall buildings in a single bound !!

All music will help you do this !!!

Learning how to play a musical instrument will not quite make you a superhuman with a cape and allow you to wear your undies on the outside in public.

However, learning a musical instrument – at ANY age – will result in a brain workout that can help you in other areas of your life.

A stronger brain is a healthier brain.  A well used brain can apply itself to other areas of day to day life.

Have fun, play saxophone, be awesome, repeat !!
