New Gigs At New Schools

I am really enjoying my music at the moment – both playing and teaching.

Recently I picked up an extra day at a new primary school.  This means that one day I am at one primary school and on another day I am at different primary school.

I am the Instrumental Music Teacher at these two schools.  I am helping the kids learn how to play the saxophone, clarinet, keyboards, guitar (acoustic and electric), flute, violin and trumpet.  It’s great.

Now, I should point out here that I am certainly no expert when it comes to some of these instruments: violin and trumpet in particular.

Saxophone is my main area of expertise.

But from a Primary School brand new beginners perspective I can certainly keep up.

The good thing about just starting out on your musical journey is that you can have some fun and experiment a little.  If you have never played a musical instrument before, it does not really matter if you can’t or don’t want to read music or learn musical theory.

What does matter is giving it a red hot go and trying your best to make some sounds that are vaguely heading towards being deliberate, in tune and coordinated.

My students at both schools range in age from about 7 years old to 11 years old.  Now, some of them are perhaps just a little too young to actually produce what could arguably be called “real music” just yet.  But they are trying !!

I have managed to get most of them to have a giggle and some fun with playing Sax and Violence as played by Zoot from the Muppets.

This has been hilarious….at least for me.

I have also had the extreme and awesome responsibility to actually introduce these kids to the Muppets !  How can anyone NOT know who Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy and their other Muppet friends are ?!?!?

So, we’ve plinked and plunked, we’ve squeaked and honked, we’ve learnt a few notes and how to change them and I’ve had a great time.  And I think most of the kids have too.

Sometimes it’s like herding cats, but other times it’s inspiring to see how much some of these young students want to be able to play their instruments and how hard they are trying.

And that goes for the students here at HowToPlayTheSax.com .  I know that all of them are giving it a red hot go too.

I am honoured to be able to offer some help for people who want a hand as they embark on their musical journey.

Especially the saxophone students of all ages who are Members here at HowToPlayTheSax.com 🙂

Have fun, play saxophone, be awesome, repeat !!

Thanks,

Matthew
